And AS Troshin demonstrated that urea for example will change the water content of a cell but it is free to enter the cell so it isn't it isn't pulling water out as an osmotic effect but it enters the cell freely and simply changes the properties of the protein system so that less water is bound by the cell proteins.

The condition of being low thyroid means you lose sodium because you can't put it back into the bloodstream from the urine. A low thyroid person will tend to put more sodium into the urine, making their blood dilute, which leads to swelling of the tissues. But the swelling really started back in the cell which became alkaline.
